For starters, I like to send out a big thanks to Tim for featuring us today! It’s an invitation I instantly accepted and I hope I can share lots of tips and strategies to making your shop a big success on Etsy.
My name is Bibi and I run the Etsy shop, JooJoobs.
We have been selling on Etsy since 2013, and with lots of luck and hard work, we managed a little over 46k in sales over that time span.
Tim sent me a questionnaire to answer, so here we go!!
1. Tell us about your creative business and the story of how you started making and selling.
I come from a family of entrepreneurs. My father Noi, has been making and selling leather products for 30 years. Myself, being the oldest child, I was literally raised in my father’s workshop, watching my father make leather goods, 24/7. JooJoobs came to life as collective of three members, my father, my husband and myself. We had a rough start selling online, made a lot of mistakes but persevered until we figured out what its takes to be successful.
2. 3 tips for sellers who are just starting out selling on Etsy.
1. Self Evaluation
I honestly think, if you master these three tips, you will be successful. The internet marketers out there always want you to believe that you need their latest book, or software to be successful, that you need to master SEO or pay for hundreds of dollars of Facebook Ads to be successful. I disagree. Self Evaluation, photography and focus, will easily get the job done.
1. Self Evaluation – Lots of people, us included, jump right into starting an Etsy business. This is good and bad. Its good, that you took the 1st step that most people never do, but its bad because, without some serious self evaluation, you are going to fail. Everyone fails their 1st internet business. Get back up and try again.
• Is there a true demand for your product?
• If there is a demand, can you be the best vendor? You don’t have to be the best, but people are going to have trust you and you are going to have to deliver high quality products
• What the limitations of your product/business? We started out selling bags. We love making bags but in the end, we realized, we were never going to be able to overcome the very long list of cons, so we started over. We switched products, we changed our name and we did step #2.
2. Product Photography – people don’t buy products when they shop online, they buy pictures. You get 5 pictures to convince the customer, just how awesome you (and your product) are.
Don’t read another guide, don’t watch another how-to video on SEO, fix your pictures and keep fixing your pictures until they are the best pictures in your niche. And then fix them some more.
3. Focus – Try your best to ignore the ‘internet marketing noise’ and focus on making your shop super beautiful. Etsy brings you all the traffic you will every need. You just need to make sure when customers get to your store, their first words out of their mouth, are “wow”. “These guys definitely are the guys I want to buy from.”
3. What is your largest source of traffic for your shop?
The largest source of traffic is definitely internal Etsy traffic. It comes equally from search, ads, categories, treasuries, editor picks, etc. We generally focus on keeping our shop and product top notch. We have done very little to bring in traffic from outside of Etsy.
4. List 4 of your favorite items and tell us why you LOVE to make them!
I don’t think I have a favorite item. I love being able to create new items, especially custom requests.
My favorite event is by far, weddings. I love weddings and we love being a part of someone’s big day. Its very gratifying, to know, someone has trusted you with this big responsibility, and we thrive on it.
Growing up, with my father being an entrepreneur, he had many ups and downs. So I realized (and have experienced) things change quickly. So the success we have achieved on Etsy, actually scares us a bit and keeps us very humble.
