Etsy Published a New Search Patent

New Search Feature Coming to Etsy?

On November 22, 2012, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) published a patent to Etsy, Inc. titled, “Systems and Methods for Guided Construction of a Search Query in an Electronic Commerce Environment”.

The patent describes the invention in both a lengthy narratives (34 pages) as well as diagrams (7 images) showing what the future search feature might look like.

Based on the diagrams, it appears this search feature would allow a user to type in a keyword while other related keywords appear underneath the search bar to allow a more specific search phrase to be created. One diagram shows that there might be a new side bar that would allow a search to be further refined by color, theme, style, materials, purpose, specification, technique, or gift recipient.

Through my interpretation of the patent legal language description, you could consider this patent as trying to “help or assist” the buyer to find the real or best keyword phrase they are looking for – a type of “guided construction” of a search phrase – as the patent title implies. The additional search refinement appears to try and allow potential customers the ability to narrow their search in hopes of finding what they are looking for more easily.

One thing to consider, not all patents that companies file actually make it into production. So, just because this patent is now public information in the WIPO patent library means that Etsy could implement this tomorrow, a few months from now, or never. Only Etsy knows the true purpose behind this patent.

I hope this information helps you as an Etsy seller become aware of what is happening in the news at Etsy and how it can impact your business’ operations. This would not be the first time Etsy “tweaks” the search feature and it would probably not be the last. Appearing in the right place in Etsy’s search for the proper keywords is paramount to higher levels of success on Etsy.

June 2012 Etsy Stats – $61.9 Million in Goods Sold

The stats from Etsy.

$61.9 million of goods (after refunds and cancellations) were sold by our community in June, 6.1% lower than May’s $65.9 million
That represents 2,951,224 items sold for the month, 2.7% lower than May’s 3,034,442
2,184,850 new items were listed in the month, 2.8% lower than May’s 2,248,143
689,614 new members joined the Etsy community in the month, up 1,249, or 0.2%, from May
1.23 billion page views were recorded on the site in June.

That represents 3,034,442 items sold for the month, 2.4% higher than April’s 2,962,196

688,365 new members joined the Etsy community in the month, up 935, or 0.1%, from April

That represents 2,962,196 items sold for the month, 2.2% lower than March’s 3,028,186

Etsy Raises $40 Million Increasing it’s Worth to Almost $700 Million

Etsy is the first site that comes to mind when buyers are looking for handmade and vintage goods, and supplies. Etsy announced today that they raised $40 million in new funding. Including this round of funding, Etsy has now raised around $92 million.

Notes From Chad: Funding Etsy’s Future

We want to do more for our community and we want to make sure Etsy grows and prospers. Today, we are announcing that we are adding some new resources to match our world-changing ambitions. Etsy has closed $40 million of funding from a roster of investors who have been believers in Etsy for a long time. In fact, all of Etsy’s existing investors — Burda, Union Square Ventures, Accel Partners, and Index Ventures (who led this investment round) — committed to Etsy in a big way. They’ve continued to invest all along because they fundamentally believe in Etsy and what we’re doing.

Etsy has 875,000 sellers and 15 million users around the world. Every month, Etsy sees about 40 million unique visitors. In 2011, Etsy processed $525 million in sales.

Etsy states they are going to grow Direct Checkout, provide gift cards, and add more shipping options. They are also going to roll out new products to make the buying and selling experience on Etsy more attractive to more people. They are going to invest in their international expansion , new tech infrastructure to allow to scale, and acquire new top talent. Etsy has already bought the wholesale site Trunkt.

With Facebook soon going public, Etsy’s actions today signal to the financial world that Etsy is in the game, too, but playing by their own rules.

New Etsy Search Feature Can Drive Traffic Out of Sellers Shops

Hi all, thank you for the report. We have been running a number of experiments today around search suggestions. Some of these experiments are of little use within shops, so in light of the discussion here we have turned them off on shop pages for now. Sorry for the confusion!

If you do a little shopping on Etsy you will notice a search feature while you are in a shop that is showing and suggesting items from other shops. Go to the home page of a shop and click the search “This Shop”.

As soon as you start to type items will appear with links and pictures. These are not items from this shop, but suggestions for items from other shops. This will confuse shoppers and the seller that brought that buyer to their shop may lose a sale. While these pictures are not actually clickable at this time, the question of copyright and who made these items can be raised.

Not until you hit the search button to you actually get the results you were looking for

Here is another example from BriguysGirls . She has over 200 items in the personalized jewelry search , but they don’t show up until you hit that search button.
