Whether you are tweeting professionally or personally, your first Twitter post sets up your followers’ expectations so you want it to send the right message. (Pun totally intended!) So, here are some of the most potent ideas I’ve got on how to make the first impression you toss out there really count, followed by specific pointers on how to craft a successful start!
Tackling Twitter Professionally
There are some considerations to work through to make sure you are using Twitter effectively for your business. First, ask yourself these questions:
- Why would a user follow you on Twitter AND Facebook?
- How will your posts be different in each platform and why should they differ?
- Why do you have a Facebook/Twitter in the first place?
The answers need to be more profound than “my competitors have one” or “someone told me to make one” because your investment in these platforms should have a plan based on creating real and definable returns – otherwise, why bother committing to what may become a daily responsibility? Dig deeper and phrase your answers to these questions into a promise you make to your followers. For example, the first twitter post I did for Sterling Finance Company was:
This first post promises to reach and help even more people than can be accessed through Facebook, offers a more succinct message that followers can still interact with, promises to make information and services accessible through links, and drives home the philosophy that SFC’s customers are important assets worth working and sharing with and hopefully investing in. By knowing why you’re tweeting, you can create a plan and successfully execute it.
Your Own Personal Twitter
Ah…memories. I joined Twitter to tweet about my shows and workshops in the Chicago Improv Festival. My first tweet in 2009 was:
It was rushed and not very thoughtful. I cut straight to the chase and started talking about Improv. In truth, it’s not uncommon to start a Twitter just to promote a particular event you do or skill you develop. Jumping into the deep end isn’t such a bad thing, but I definitely recommending putting more thought into it than I did back then. When tweeting for yourself, your first tweet should:
- Showcase your personality: use your unique voice to create something compelling and telling.
- Give people a taste of what’s to come. Include a bit of info on something you’re passionate about sharing, express yourself in a positive way that people respond to, share links to pictures of your life and details that make your experience of the world special and worth following in the future.
- It doesn’t have to be a pledge. Don’t tell people you’ll be listing show dates every Friday unless you have a plan to make that happen – remember, you’re setting up expectations. Basically, don’t make promises you can’t keep to your followers or they’ll be disappointed and may stop following!

Don’t start with an apology
So many people do this! You haven’t posted yet, so you can’t possibly have done it wrong and everyone’s just glad you’re getting on board – so start with a bang, not a tail-tuck. Besides, who’s going to want to follow you if you present yourself as a lame duck? You’re obviously awesome. This is your debut of awesome-ness and you’ve got nothing to apologize for!
Don’t start with a generic, “Welcome to my Twitter.” I consider those “throw away” messages. Jump right into the valuable content your audience is hungry for. Your personal contacts want an insight into your life, deeds, and inner workings. Your professional contacts want insight into your business, services, and philosophy so give ‘em what’ll keep ‘em coming back for more!
Offer a Slice of The Future
Start with a glimpse of what’s to come and don’t hesitate to be transparent. If you’re all over the music scene, start by rocking your audience with information about your passion and why it matters so much to you. If you’re representing a company, tell your potential clients what you do, what principles you operate on, and invite them to utilize your services.
Whether personally or professionally (or both!), introduce yourself on Twitter with a great first post that embodies a virtual smile and a handshake of welcome that projects a future of collaboration. You’re all set – go for it!
