From The Corporate World to Being Your Own Boss – Interview With Amber of Red Tile Studio

Tell us about your creative business and the story of how you started making and selling.

The idea for Red Tile Studio began back in 2010. I had recently been laid off from a corporate job in the Telecom field. I really wanted to do something in a more creative format. I had always been a fan of Etsy and thought it might be a good fit for my mother and I. She is an artist and I love design, so we merged our strengths to create our art block series.

3 tips for sellers who are just starting out selling on Etsy.

- keep it simple- know your strengths and build from there, don’t get into too many products at once
-join a team- this was one of the most important things I did, I know have a network of friends all over the world
-have a clear vision of what you want from your shop- don’t expect big sells right away- create what you love and hopefully others will love and appreciate it

What is your largest source of traffic for your shop?

Currently Pinterest brings in the most traffic to our site.
In addition, we also get residual traffic from a post that was on www.stylemepretty.com and that was from over two years ago. One big feature can make a huge difference.

List 4 of your favorite items and tell us why you LOVE to make them!

All of my favorite items revolve around our art blocks.
My current favorite designs are:

The fox is one of our oldest and most popular designs:

What I love about making them is the whole design process that is involved. As we add new series and designs, we come up with stories and how to work in our mix of animals and geometric and nature patterns as a cohesive piece. For example we have a Moroccan themed collection, a safari collection and a southwestern and Australian collection. Building the story and putting the designs together is challenging and fun!

How has your success selling on Etsy changed your life?
It’s allowed us to create what we love and share that with a huge audience. I can’t imagine not being my own boss. The creative freedom is refreshing and makes you appreciate all the opportunities that come your way. There’s really nothing better than doing what you love.
