New Etsy Search Feature Can Drive Traffic Out of Sellers Shops

UPDATE FROM ETSY::

Greg Fodor from gfodor says

Hi all, thank you for the report. We have been running a number of experiments today around search suggestions. Some of these experiments are of little use within shops, so in light of the discussion here we have turned them off on shop pages for now. Sorry for the confusion!

If you do a little shopping on Etsy you will notice a search feature while you are in a shop that is showing and suggesting items from other shops. Go to the home page of a shop and click the search “This Shop”.

As soon as you start to type items will appear with links and pictures. These are not items from this shop, but suggestions for items from other shops.  This will confuse shoppers and the seller that brought that buyer to their shop may lose a sale.  While these pictures are not actually clickable at this time,  the question of copyright and who made these items can be raised.

Not until you hit the search button to you actually get the results you were looking for

Here is another example from BriguysGirls .  She has over 200 items in the personalized jewelry search , but they don’t show up until you hit that search button.

Here is an Etsy forum thread on the topic : here

How do you feel about this feature?

  1. I just tried this…It’s awful! What made Etsy want to make this change???

  2. I am going to seriously start looking for a new outlet to sell my handmade items if Etsy doesn’t stop “fixing” things that aren’t broken. Why did they even begin to think this was a great idea? Many of us smaller, less known shop struggle so hard to get people to our shops in the first place and now Etsy has created a reason for shoppers to leave before they really even look around.

  3. Why do we even have a shop in the first place when Etsy dangles a carrot that leads customers out of it?

What? next it will be other shops advertising within our shops?

    thanks for the post Timothy!

  4. Folks this isn’t a surprise. Etsy has always been run as if they were the only one who had to make money. We all have been sold the Etsy story because a few people have been successful while most people struggle to earn pennies compared to the time spent.

  5. Thank you Tim for writing about this and making everyone aware of this! If I read correctly above, that they have turned that search feature off…for now? Meaning we have to keep an eye out to make sure they don’t turn it back on in the future

  6. I just tried it and did not get the other items to show up. Not sure why. It seems like a lousy idea…and while I like shopping Amazon for commercial/retail, this would give me that feel, and its not what I want here. I hope they decide to not keep that!!

  7. I heard this was gonna happen a few months back and was afraid they would go thru with it. This is aweful, I spend a good amount on monthly advertising & would hate to have people leave my shop before they got a chance to finish their search within it… I read Etsy’s response and I’m glad that they listened.

I think this is another reason why small businesses should really have their own website beyond Etsy. It is a wonderful place to sell and I’ve been fortunate & thankful to find an audience for my work there. However, it’s not my own shop, I’m sort of just renting space and try can do whatever they wish to that space. I LOVE selling there and I won’t leave but I have also explored other avenues. :)

Thank you for this article and posting Etsy’s response. Your content is always very insightful & worth reading daily. Thank you!

Disheartening to say the least. Etsy, by it’s nature, is already a highly competitive marketplace already. The only outcome I see arising from this brilliant decision, is angry store owners taking their wares to another site…one that promotes a ” we r all in this together” environment. Etsy seems determined to be nothing short of “Indie Walmart” driving artists away.
The negative effect that I am most concerned about is this….it seems as though the numbers of artists who have made it their life’s work to create/design in whatever medium their passion lies..for many artists, the drive to create is as strong as the drive to breath. For many of us, creating and being able to share that work of art with the entire world, is a dream come true…but now…..that life giving force has turned into never ending listing, re-listing, learning SEO, photography, ad words, advertising, twitter, hashtag, NON stop requirement to self promote yourself to death just in hope that you might drive just one person to your store…but thank you Etsy…as soon as the search pops up , they might click right back out! Calgon, take me away….
I’m no stranger to the hard work it takes to own your own business, but really…when is enough…enough?

  9. I think this idea is the worst one ever! What were they thinking? I have a hard enough time trying to keep my head above water as it is!! Bad Etsy, just so bad!!

Why is my comment still pending but there is a post after mine up? Just curious….

  11. I just tried it and apparently this feature is not live on my shop…it works the way it always has and only shows my shop items when I go into the ‘This Shop’ search box.

  12. What a bad idea! It is a big NO! It will show not things from my shop! why would they want to do this?

  13. If this is actually happening it’s absolutely unacceptable. But I’m not seeing it.

  14. Apparently it’s a bug or mistake or something:

I just wanted to stop in and let you know that we’re investigating what’s happening here. We’ll post back with information as we have it.

I know Etsy has done some stupid or seemingly stupid stuff in the past but maybe we should investigate things before we freak out. I mean bugs and oopses happen all the time too.

  15. Too many sad and confusing changes going on with Etsy these days. They punish those that truly are handmade craftspeople, celebrate the resellers, and make stupid choices like this search option. The onlu thing they’re driving away is folks like us…

  16. It’s disheartening what’s happening with Etsy. They didn’t happen to hire a bunch of folks from eBay, hmmm? I ask because the “changes” and “fixes” seem awful similar to a string of the same at eBay a few years back.

    The lessons learned were:
    1. don’t count on a selling venue you don’t own
    2. sell in more than one or two venues
    3. from all venues, funnel your repeat customers to return to your own URL to buy next time

  17. This is a terrible idea!

  18. Ah well that explains everything. A first time buyer thought she was buying something from me, but apparently she used the search function – she did have it set to “this shop” – and it still led her out. Not being particularly Etsy savvy, she didn’t realize it until it was too late. Because she’s a friend, she asked me to figure out how that had happened. Now I understand. So because of this “feature” I lost a sale, she was upset and she is now completely off Etsy and refuses to use the site again as it is “too confusing.” So thanks for that, Etsy.
