Resellers Steal Confidence, Trust, and Integrity from Legitimate Etsy Sellers
Resellers Steal Confidence, Trust, and Integrity from Legitimate Etsy Sellers
Every customer on Etsy has expectations of the products they see for sale.
The moment an Etsy seller views a product, expectations regarding the product are being formed. Customer expectations lead to one of two actions:
- - Purchasing the product
- - Not purchasing the product
With the widespread presence of resellers on Etsy and the recent press in articles from the Wall Street Journal, and a recent reseller scandal that brought the Etsy community to a boiling point, Handmadeology is providing a solution.
Certified Handmade provides Etsy buyers confidence that they are purchasing authentic handmade products. Handmade Certified provides Etsy sellers a proactive solution to the plague of “resellers”.
Etsy’s Terms of Use state:
“You may also wish to consider using a third-party escrow service or services that provide additional user verification.”

Handmade Certified provides additional verification to a customer that an item is handmade. Etsy shop’s that have this certification appear more trustworthy to potential customers over those Etsy sellers who are not certified.
The Handmade Certified Assessment is made up of 3 parts:
1. Handmade Declaration Statement – A signed statement declaring your handmade creations and adherence to Etsy policies. This provides 1st party assurance. “I am handmade.”
2. Handmade Association Agreement – A signed agreement to help monitor handmade authenticity among other Handmade Certified members. This provides 2nd party assurance. “We are handmade.”
3. Handmade Validation Survey – A twenty-two question survey providing evidence and details surrounding the handmade process, products, and artist that is reviewed and verified by Handmade Certified.
This provides 3rd party assurance. “They are handmade.” These three levels of certification provide assurance to customers that a product is indeed handmade – not a mass-produced knockoff.
