The Awesome & Amazing Madness of Giveaways
I love giveaways, don’t you? There’s nothing better than receiving free stuff in the mail & there seem to be giveaways everywhere you look or at least, everywhere I look. Lately, I seem to be having pretty good luck & I’ve won quite a few great handmade things. So, what’s the secret? I don’t pretend to really know, but there are a few things that might make your chances a little better. First, enter often. The more giveaways you enter, the more likely it will be that you’ll win something & the less bad you’ll feel if you don’t win a particular giveaway. I haven’t won anything major yet, still waiting on, oh say an Ipad or something, but I have won some lovely things. My second tip would be to enter more of the low entry giveaways. You don’t have to stay away from the major giveaways, I’ve won a couple of things on some of the major blogs, but your odds are much better if the entries are low. In other words, there’s simply less competition. Don’t enter simply for the sake of entering, but there are plenty of blogs out there giving out lovely prizes, even smaller blogs trying to build their readership. How do you find giveaways? Basically, by surfing the web. I pretty much stumble upon them. There are blogs out there that specialize in giveaways, like Simply Stacie or ByHand & they’re definitely worth checking out. If you have a blog yourself consider joining a community like BlogFrog, where bloggers gather & share their news, including their giveaways. Check out SocialMoms on Twitter where users will tweet & share their giveaways. The added benefit is “growing your tribe,” the support of communities of bloggers & Twitter users from around the world. If you win something great, spread the news, let people know, whether through a blog post, on Twitter or on FaceBook. This helps both the blog hosting the giveaway & the person who has sponsored the giveaway. They may even link back to you, how great is that?
Thinking about hosting your own giveaway? Some of the same advice applies: Check out the social groups I’ve mentioned. They will help you spread the news & grow the number of entrants to your giveaway. Consider having your giveaway hosted on a larger blog, like Simply Stacie. Many blogs do giveaway link parties, add your blog to their list & while you’re at it, check out some of the other giveaways. Make your prize something that you would like to receive, but don’t giveaway something you can’t afford, especially when you are just starting out. Make your first entry something like a comment on your blog, to avoid potential pitfalls. Additional entries can be things like following or liking your FaceBook page. This will also help ensure more of a following that will stick around when the giveaway is over. Lastly, it’s normal for some to stop following when the giveaway is over. Some are more interested in giveaways in general & don’t really follow or read other types of blogs, so don’t take it too badly if not everyone sticks around. It’s not generally personal.
Aren’t giveaways great?
