MagMoment says:

Today was a rainy day at the Sandy Springs Festival in Georgia. I am ever the optimist and sold more art than the dry day before. Yes! That’s the first lesson in today. The second is — Here is a list of supplies for rainy art shows because my tent leaks:

extra trash bags and baggies of different sizes
1 extra waterproof bin
2 rolls of paper towels
extra dry clothes including hats, jackets
4 hula hoops

Other general suggestions:

* My first thought today was take extra art to my car before beginning the day.
* Mary Sweeney, owner of Felted Heart, a Sandy Springs festival vendor suggested pulling up rugs before they get wet.
* Bring hula hoops to prop between the metal brackets of your tent and the ceiling so that it bows up and the rain runs off the tent; I learned this suggestion from Ann Finley at her festival class at Spruill Arts Center.
* Another Sandy Springs vendor Allen Mogensen said that he sprays his tent (2 coatings) with starch at the beginning of each season and the water runs right off of his tent.

  1. I’ve been through several rainy shows, so I second everything here! I’d also add, if your tent doesn’t already have walls, they are a good investment! Keeping rain from blowing in can be a life saver.

I’ve never heard of the hula hoop trick, though. I’d love to see a photo of this in action?

    Thanks, Hazel!

  2. Love the hula hoop idea, would also love to see a photo of how that works! Can you post a couple?

I’m going to try the starch ideas as well, we frequently get drips inside as the water slowly seeps through!

    Thank you for sharing

  3. I’d suggest getting plastic – sorry – shopping bags if you only have paper. Not as pretty, but – as a potter – I’d worry about a bag getting wet and a pot crashing to the ground.
OK, spray starch you use for ironing?
I like the hula hoop idea.
Any suggestions on things you can do to make the customers happier? A reward for coming out in the rain that works well?

  4. I didn’t realize that my blog post was reposted here… I would add a couple more comments now that I have done a few more rainy shows.

-take towels; they soak up the rain best
-always try to get a long with your fellow vendors becuase one or two friends in a rain storm can mean a lot
-yes, I recently bought huge shopping bags and they work for covering stuff in the rain.
-I do have walls on my tent, but they leak too. Now I immediately take my art down. Sometimes I stow it in my car right away. Always assume the weather can get worse.
-I recommend a broom or mop to push up the water lodged in the tent roof.

I will write about shows again soon.
