Want to go full-time? Time to start number crunching (ew.)

Let me take a wild guess–you have been plugging away on your business for a couple of years now, you have sold many (many) items, and although it is not a full-time gig yet you think if you just sell a bit more every month it could be!

This is the part where I tell you that if you sold a few more every month…you will still be plugging away at a part time gig. Because “a few more” isn’t the thresh hold you need to cross. As much as you might not enjoy hearing this–

You can not do the same thing you have been doing and find different/better/successful results.

Before you fight me on how you know you are well on your way to success I want to ask you a few more questions:

1.) When was the last time you raised your prices?

2.) Have you ever written yourself a paycheck for at least 55% of your gross profit?

3.) Is your e-commerce site Etsy/Indiemade/Big Cartel/Art Fire, etc.?

4.) Do you have an hourly rate?

Why are these things important? Let me ask you just one more thing–what does success mean to you? We can all sugar coat this BUT success is usually something that we feel when we are business owners 100% of the time and still have money left over. And this will never happen if you don’t know how much your business costs, how much you cost, and how much you are worth.

I am actually going to pretend to give you homework (which you will probably ignore because you just want to sell a bit more first, right?)

Here is your homework–learn your numbers! Which numbers? To begin here are a few…

Your overhead

Your desired salary

Your taxes

Your hourly rate

What do numbers have to do with your brand?

Your brand is you and your ability to not only build a great creative business worth buying from, but your ability to be a business. That is where success happens and you pass that thresh hold into full time.

I think you are worth a million-

  1. So true, as a CPA, I see many small start-ups that aren’t taking all of these things into account…no pun intended :)

  2. Love it, need to learn more
