Your Etsy Relevancy Strategy : Do You Have One?
Etsy sellers have been given a huge opportunity to get their shops on top of the Etsy search. The old Etsy search was based largely on recency . By default, a buyer would see the most recently listed or renewed item for that search. The new Etsy search is based on relevancy. The playing field is now level – everyone must act or your products will not perform their best in Etsy’s search.
Now is the time for Etsy sellers to take action, but if you don’t have a clear strategy–all the work of renaming your titles and tags can be meaningless. A well defined relevancy strategy will help you set clear goals and the ability to make sure your title and tags are working together. We’re defining five key relevancy strategies and a “how-to” checklist to accomplish these.
We’re also developing a spreadsheet tool that will help you accomplish this major Etsy transition. . . more details are coming soon! (Sneak peak ~ Etsy download of inventory data, analysis performed automatically, title and tagging planning tool, and a way to make sure your titles and tags match your stated relevancy strategy)!
Here is the kicker… At the same time you are setting up your strategy for the new Etsy search, you are also going to be putting your shop in a better position in the Google search. Changing your titles and tags around multiple times can hurt your Google search results, so doing it correct the first time is crucial. With our ebook and spreadsheet, you will be able to accomplish just that!

Thanks so much for creating this. I have been reading about the changes and have no idea how to optimize my listings for the new search. Can’t wait for Thursday

I don’t have a strategy for Etsy relevancy for a very simple reason: I was already working optimizing my listings for Google which is of course built on relevancy. Since I was already optimizing all the text I use to help my Google ranking I don’t have to worry much about Etsy except for getting the new attributes filled in.

I feel so lost – new attributes? Not sure what new attributes are. So much to figure out with this relevancy. I wish we had the chance to purchase individual things instead of having to sign up for pro – I don’t always need or want all that you are offering for pro.

Oh no! I did not know that tweeking titles and tags would hurt your Google search results! I wish I had this info before I made my multiple title & tag switching experiments. I do like the fact that I am seen on multiple pages of the search results- just trying to figure out how to move those results up higher somehow. My stats are the same but it is probably too early to tell if there is a major improvement or not. Thank you in advance for this information- I can’t wait until you roll this info out!

it does take a while .. sometimes months for Google to recrawl your all of your shops pages. Testing your titles , tags and keywords in your shop is not a good idea… It is best to do your research before hand.

I feel that I am JUST beginning to figure out how Etsy was working…now it is changing and I haven’t a clue as to what it all means. Frustration is now my middle name regardless of the relevancy.
I have a very busy life dealing with, well, life and just making this stuff, all the stuff I am now doing to promote on Etsy takes more time away from creation and now it is going to take MORE time? I feel like giving up, really and truly. I have NO more money to put toward any more anything and here it comes again, frustrated. grrrr.

I hear you Julie! I have felt the same way several times in the past few years of my Etsy journey, but it’s my passion that keeps me going. Where there’s a will there is a way!
I’m excited to see how things go with the relevency default, this past week has gone well. I do feel that it’s better to put my time and energy into optimizing my tutu store with long term effects rather than simply relisting constantly. I really do!

So all my stats are pretty low since I’m new and not doing this full time, but since updating 4 listings to try a specific strategy I’ve had as many people find me through search by 9am EST as I’ve typically had for a whole day! Not that it’s saying much, but it’s cool to me. It took some thought, and time, but this was super useful. Thanks!

Interesting, the program should be very helpful. I’ve done a lot of work changing titles & tags (in samsstuff, shellseye is pretty new & doesn’t need as many changes, but I’m getting there, too) & I think it may be helping in most cases, but I’m not sure. I like that the playing field is more even & we’re less likely to be stuck constantly in the middle of the pack, unless we constantly renew. I think it’s less frustrating for buyers (& treasury makers) as well.
