Road to 1000 – Blessings All Mine

Tell us your story!

In February 2010 my beautiful firstborn son came into this world. My husband and I had always talked about me staying home once we had babies, and now the time had come. My baby girl was born 21 months later in November of 2011. I love love love spending my whole day with my kids! It is the best job in the world. As much as I LOVED my new mommy job, I knew I needed a creative outlet of some sort. In March of 2013, when I got to the point where I felt like the craziness of two teeny babies was passing, Blessings All Mine was created.

I knew I wanted to open an Etsy shop before I even knew what I wanted to sell. I had a few friends utilizing and seeing success on the site and had the opportunity to seek out their wisdom before taking the plunge myself. Now that I knew I wanted to open my own shop, I spent hours on Pinterest trying to decide what to make. I made a few things before settling on wreaths.

Wreaths! EVERYone needs a wreath, right?! If you don’t have one, why not? If you do already have one, you know someone else that needs one. Exactly. I knew after making my first wreath that this what what I definitely wanted to build my shop on. The excitement of starting my own business was enough to get me through the first month or two of having put more money into it than I was getting out of it. My sweet family and friends were so supportive! My business started with them buying my first pieces and I am so grateful, but I’ll never forget when I made my first sale to a stranger! Someone from Minnesota! Someone that just found my wreaths on Etsy, liked them, and decided to buy one for herself! I had to find a wreath box (I used an old christmas wreath box that we had in our basement), I wrote her a thank you letter (heehee!), and sent her my wreath. That, to me, was my first real sale and the beginning of an exciting journey!

Tell us 3 things you learned this year about running your creative business.

*Make sure to keep your customers updated! Don’t let people forget about your business. Put a little extra time into your Instagram and Facebook business pages. Hashtags are becoming more and more relevant to gaining more followers, so make sure you’re using them!

*If you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a break. Etsy is great because you can put it in vacation mode and pick right back up where you left off! If you’re so busy that you’re not enjoying it anymore, you might want to take a short hiatus from your business if finances allow it.

*Don’t touch the hot glue. ;)

Why do you create what you create?

I love making wreaths because they are the first thing people see when they come to your house. Who doesn’t want a lovely door?! It’s a great first impression of your home.

My shop, Blessings All Mine is based around the burlap flowers that make a simple wreath into something lovely. I realized I had a special talent for making these flowers when I tried to teach a group of moms how to make them once. Haha, it’s probably mostly because I’m a bad teacher, but we had a good time laughing at their pitiful flowers.

One of the biggest selling points is that people can customize their wreaths to be whatever colors they want. Burlap is so popular right now and there are quite a few colors to choose from and I keep finding more! I love when customers ask for certain color combinations that I would never think to put together and they turn out looking amazing!
