Running An Etsy Sale But No One Knows? Tips For Making Your Sale Visible

So you are running an Etsy sale with the new awesome Etsy On Sale App?  That is great, but how do you get people to see your sale?

The best place to start is Facebook.    Head over to your Facebook Fan Page and look for your Events application.  Everyone should have this already installed when  you start your fan page.   Sometimes the events app can be hidden in your tabs.  It is is click the arrow button and it will pop up.

Once you click the event tab you will see a button to create a new event.   There are a few important things to fill out here.

Running an etsy sale

First is the photo.   You are allowed just like your fan page a 200 by 600 photo here.  The one I designed was 190 by 500.  You want your picture to tell the whole story of your event, but not look to cluttered.   You also want to keep in mind what your thumbnail will look like.    The top half of your picture will show as your thumb for the event on walls of profiles and pages.

How to promote an Etsy Sale

Next you want to set your date that your sale/event is going to run.   You want to match this with the sale you are running on Etsy On Sale.  I suggest that you think of running a shop or section wide sale.  This will make things easier when you are ready to promote.

Now you can set the name of your sale/event and tell everyone about it in the more info box.  You are able to add links to anything in the More Info box.  All of this can be edited later.

If you are going to run a giveaway like I did you want to make sure you allow attenders to leave links.

Here is where you are going to want to pick who you are inviting to your sale/event.  You can do this now or wait.

Promoting an etsy sale on facebook

When you are ready to invite your friends it is always good to include a personal message about what you are inviting them to.

Now you are ready to launch your event.  Once you do a post about your event will automatically show up on your fan page wall.   Notice the thumbnail of the event.  Now your fans can comment, like, share, and even invite their own friends to attend the event.  This is what makes Facebook such a great place to promote your Etsy sale.

You can also share your event on your personal profile.  Just click the share button.

So now your Facebook even it up and running along with your Etsy shop sale.  Lets head over to Etsy.

First you want to start a forum thread about your sale and Facebook event.

Make sure you are using the same title as your event on Facebook.  You want everything to line up keyword wise, so Google Will like everything!  In the Etsy thread  you want to include the shop section that you have on sale.  Having a whole section on sale makes it easier for promoting.  Next you want to include a link to your Facebook event.   You will want to keep this thread alive as much as possible, but don’t waste to much time. Come back and post links to your items… and give updates on any event happenings.

So now you have created a link that you can now share in your shop announcement that will be clickable.   You will want to talk about your sale and link to the Etsy thread there your shoppers can learn more about your event.

Blogging time.

Write a post about your sale and your event.  Use the same title again and link to your event and Etsy shop.

Tips For Making Your etsy Sale Visible

Last but certainly  not least, be sure to tweet about your event and sale on Twitter!

With every step make sure you are  interacting with the attenders, friends, followers, and commenters.   People are not going to spend the time to visit your shop if you are not present.  This will take time out of your day, but it is worth it.

  13. Hi Tim ,

I love your advice and I try to read your updates often . I am using the event feature on FB right now to notify my fans of my etsy sale.

I just got a comment sometime today that this is not an event but an advertisement ! Duh yes it is , I just cannot seem to make everyone happy one way or another. :(

Sales are awful and the internet seems to be very slow. One issue that keeps coming up in my mind is everyone is creating and where the heck are the buyers ?

I have repeat clients that come back often and I also do quite a bit of custom orders.

What I am trying to say is that we are too clustered and need to break out from each other and find the buyer.

Thanks for being here :) Diana

Thanks for this Tim, I’ll have to do it when the coming weekend market sale’s gone, as I don’t know if I’ll have any items left on Etsy after this, don’t want to double sell. I bookmarked for return. Eva x

  24. Thanks Tim! I will be bookmarking this page! Excellent info!

  25. Since they have made changes in the forums. Do you have a favorite place to promote? I used to love the Promotion section just for this very reason.

  26. I have used Facebook to promote my sales and giveaways before, but never thought to make the sale into an event… It’s a great way to make sure everyone sees the information. Status updates don’t always hit the top of everybodys news feed. I have even had people completely miss a short sale until after it was over, even though I made daily posts about it. I bet this will help solve that problem :) Thanks!

  27. I’m with Pyro; didn’t think to create an event for my sales; great idea. Leaves the status update section open for more engaging dialogue!
    Thanks!

  28. Okay! I just created my first event, thanks to this tutorial! Thanks so much! Although, I had to make my picture smaller than 200×600; Facebook told me to use more of a square image, so I went down to a 200×450-ish. Looks great! Let’s see if it helps; fingers crossed!
